Tobacco and Society

A series of artworks depicting the historical, socio-cultural, and economic contexts in which tobacco evolved, is used, and is regulated.

This series of artwork showcases pencil-on-paper drawings of people engaged in using or producing traditional forms of tobacco products. The intention is to evoke the historical, socio-cultural, and economic contexts in which tobacco evolved, is used, and is regulated. The artwork is supported by the DBT (Government of India)/Wellcome Trust India Alliance.

Upendra Bhojani

Upendra graduated as a dentist and transitioned to public health doing his postgraduate and doctoral degrees in public health. He heads a Centre for Commercial Determinants of Health at the Institute of Public Health (Bengaluru) and is a DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance Senior fellow. His work interests are in areas of tobacco control, chronic health conditions, political economy of health, health inequities and urban health apart from using art for health.
